The short answer

What full arch implants are

Full arch treatment replaces a whole jaw of teeth without placing an implant under every one. Four to six implants carry a single fixed bridge, which is removed only by the clinician. It is the route people take when the remaining teeth in a jaw are failing rather than when one tooth is missing.

Full arch dental implants: what to expect

Full arch options: All-on-4, All-on-6 and more

A fixed full arch can sit on four implants, with the two at the back tilted to reach the strongest bone, or on five to eight where the bone is softer or the bite heavier. Four implants need less bone and less surgery; more implants spread the load and give the bridge more support if one has a problem. The scan decides which your jaw can carry.

All-on-4 dental implants has its own page, covering who it suits, the day of surgery and how it compares with dentures. Published W1 prices started at £13,500 per arch on 29 September 2026, set out on the dental implant cost page.

Full mouth dental implants

Full mouth dental implants replace the teeth in both jaws. The upper and lower arches are planned together but do not have to be treated the same way: a fixed bridge on one and an implant retained denture on the other costs less, and the two arches can be treated months apart.

Most full mouth cases begin with teeth that are failing through gum disease, so the plan often includes removing the remaining teeth and, where needed, bone grafting. Fixed temporary teeth on the day of surgery are sometimes possible, as the same day implants page explains.

Permanent dentures on implants

"Permanent dentures" is the everyday name for a fixed full arch bridge on implants. Unlike a denture it is screwed to the implants and only the dentist removes it, so there is no adhesive, no plate over the palate and nothing to take out at night. It is cleaned in place with a small brush or a water flosser passed underneath, and it is unscrewed at reviews so the implants can be checked.

If you would rather have teeth you can take out, an implant retained denture clips onto two or more implants instead and costs less. Loose dentures covers why a conventional denture stops fitting.

Why choose fixed full arch implants

  • The bridge is fixed, so it does not lift, rock or need adhesive the way a full denture does
  • The palate stays uncovered on an upper arch, which is what most people notice first about taste and temperature
  • Biting force is carried by implants in bone rather than by gum, so eating is closer to natural teeth
  • Angling the back implants often reaches usable bone without a sinus lift or a separate graft operation
  • Fewer implants than one per tooth means fewer surgical sites and, usually, a lower total cost than a full set of single implants

Patient journey

What to expect from full arch treatment

Consultation & preparation

Bring your full medical history and a list of medicines, particularly blood thinners, bisphosphonates or denosumab, and anything you take for diabetes. Arrange a few clear days afterwards and someone to take you home, as full arch surgery is longer than single implant placement, and ask whether sedation is offered for your case. Stock the fridge with soft food before the day.

During treatment

Aftercare

Swelling and bruising peak around day two or three and then settle. Stay on a soft diet for as long as you are told to, which protects the provisional bridge as well as the healing implants. Clean exactly as demonstrated, stop smoking completely, and keep every review appointment: the fit of the provisional and the health of the gum are checked at each one.

Full arch implant questions,
answered

What is All-on-4?

A way of replacing a whole arch of teeth on four implants, where the two at the back are angled so they reach denser bone and avoid the sinus above and the nerve below. That angling is why many people told they needed a bone graft do not need one. A fixed bridge is carried on the four.

How do I clean a fixed full arch bridge?

Underneath rather than around, which is the part that catches people out. A water flosser along the join between bridge and gum, plus interdental brushes sized to the gaps, daily. The bridge does not decay and the bone under it can still be lost. Marylebone Dental Implants shows you the technique and checks it at every maintenance visit.

Do I leave with teeth on the day of surgery?

In most full arch cases yes, a fixed provisional bridge is fitted the same day. It depends on the implants being stable enough at placement, which is measured during surgery. If they are not, the honest course is to heal first and fit teeth later, and that possibility is discussed with you beforehand.

Is All-on-4 always four implants?

No. Four is the technique the name describes, but five or six are used where the scan shows the bone or the bite needs more support, and the lower jaw and upper jaw often differ. The number is decided from your CBCT scan and your bite, then explained before you agree to anything.

Does Marylebone Dental Implants graft bone for full arch cases?

Often not, because angling the back implants is specifically intended to reach available bone and avoid grafting. Some jaws have lost too much bone for that, and Marylebone Dental Implants then discusses grafting or a sinus lift as a separate stage. Only a CBCT scan can tell you which case you are.

Can the bridge be taken out to clean?

Not by you. A fixed full arch bridge is unscrewed only by the clinician, usually at scheduled maintenance visits. Day to day you clean underneath it with an interdental brush or a water flosser. If you would rather be able to remove it yourself, an implant-retained overdenture is the alternative to discuss.

How long does full arch treatment take from start to finish?

Several months in most cases, because the bone needs time to lock onto the implants before the final bridge is made. You are not without teeth during that period. Marylebone Dental Implants sets your own timeline at assessment from your scan and your healing, rather than quoting it from a typical case.
