The short answer

What an implant consultation covers

Nothing on this site can tell you whether you can have an implant. That answer lives in your jaw, and the only way to read it is a three-dimensional scan and an examination. The consultation exists to produce a written plan with costs, stages and alternatives, which you take away and think about.

What a dental implant consultation includes

CBCT dental scan in London

A cone beam CT scan builds a 3D picture of the jaw from a series of X-ray images, so the implant dentist can measure the height, width and density of the bone at the exact spot an implant would go, and see the nerve canal and the sinus it has to avoid. UNTIL Marylebone has a DS Sirona Orthophos S cone beam scanner on site, so the scan is taken at your first appointment rather than at a separate imaging centre.

CBCT scan cost

Four W1 practices that publish fees listed a CBCT scan at £95 to £250 on 29 September 2026, as set out on the dental implant cost page. Marylebone Dental Implants confirms what your assessment costs when the appointment is arranged.

Dental implants for elderly patients

Age alone does not rule implants out. What matters at any age is bone, gum health and general health, and in older patients the medicines list matters most: treatment for osteoporosis such as bisphosphonates or denosumab, blood thinners and diabetes treatment can all change the plan, which is why the consultation reviews them before anything is proposed.

For many older people the aim is not a full set of fixed teeth but a denture that stops moving. Two or more implants under a denture is one way to do that, as the implant retained dentures and loose dentures pages explain.

A second opinion on a dental implant plan

If you already have an implant plan or a quote from elsewhere, bring it, along with any scans. The examination and CBCT scan at UNTIL Marylebone give you an independent written plan, so you can compare the two stage by stage before you commit to either.

The same applies to work that is already in your mouth: a failing dental bridge or bone loss you have been told rules implants out can be assessed the same way.

Areas treated

Why a dental implant consultation comes first

  • A CBCT scan measures the bone you actually have, instead of estimating from a flat X-ray
  • The plan sets out every stage separately, so you can see what is surgery, what is restoration and what is maintenance
  • Alternatives are set out alongside implants, including bridges, dentures and doing nothing for now
  • Any grafting requirement is identified before you commit, rather than appearing partway through treatment
  • You are matched to an implant dentist at UNTIL Marylebone whose experience suits what the scan shows

Patient journey

What to expect at your implant assessment

Consultation & preparation

Bring a list of your medicines and any medical conditions, plus any recent X-rays or a treatment plan quoted elsewhere if you have one. Bring your dentures if you wear them. It helps to write down what bothers you most about the current situation, because that shapes the plan more than any measurement does.

During treatment

Aftercare

Your written plan follows the appointment rather than being handed over in the chair, so you can read it without pressure. Take the time you need, and come back with questions: a second appointment to go through a plan properly costs nothing compared with agreeing to the wrong treatment.

Implant consultation questions,
answered

Am I suitable for dental implants?

Most adults are, but suitability turns on bone volume, gum health and general health rather than on wanting them. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, untreated gum disease and some bone medicines all affect it. Nobody can answer this from a photograph or over the phone: it needs an examination and a scan.

Do I need a CBCT scan for a dental implant?

For implant planning, effectively yes. A flat X-ray shows height but not width, and cannot show exactly where the nerve or the sinus sits. A cone beam CT gives a three-dimensional measurement of the bone available. It is taken on site at UNTIL Marylebone rather than referred elsewhere.

Is a CBCT scan safe?

A cone beam CT uses X-rays, so it does carry a small radiation dose, but that dose is considerably lower than a medical CT of the same area. It is taken only where it will change the treatment decision, which for implant planning it almost always does. Tell the clinician if you might be pregnant.

Will Marylebone Dental Implants give me a price at the consultation?

You get a written plan with the cost of each stage set out separately, after the scan has been reviewed. Marylebone Dental Implants quotes nothing before that, because pricing an implant before seeing the bone would be guesswork. Published W1 ranges are on the cost page for comparison, and where two approaches are reasonable each is costed.

Which dentist will I see at Marylebone Dental Implants?

A GDC-registered implant dentist practising at UNTIL Marylebone. More than 40 dentists hold memberships at the club, so you are matched to one whose experience fits what your case needs rather than to whoever is next available. You can verify any UK dentist free on the General Dental Council public register.

What should I bring to an implant consultation?

Any recent X-rays or scans you already hold, a list of your medicines including anything for bone density, and the name of your general dentist. Then the question you actually came with, in your own words, because a consultation that starts from the treatment rather than from the problem tends to arrive at the treatment it started from.

How long does a first appointment take?

Its length is confirmed when your assessment is arranged, and most of it is examination and scan rather than conversation. Marylebone Dental Implants reads the CBCT with you rather than at you, so you leave understanding what the bone looks like and why one approach was proposed. The written plan follows once the scan has been studied properly.
